Read the Abidjan Declaration for a sustainable management of resources and access for all to water and sanitation in Africa.

For the first time, the Faecal Sludge Management Alliance (FSMA) partnered with the African Water and Sanitation Association to co-host the 21st AfWA Congress & Exhibition and the 7th International Faecal Sludge Management Conference in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, to bring together water and sanitation in this joint event, including faecal sludge management.

The joint-event was held from February 19 to 23, 2023. It featured the theme “Acting for sustainable resources management and access for all to water and sanitation in Africa”, and was a great opportunity to bring together the world’s leading experts, engineers, technicians, researchers, and stakeholders, to meet the concerns of our fellow citizens, in a world where water and sanitation challenges are just too many.

The FSM Alliance (FSMA)

The FSM Alliance is a member-based network to support organisations and individuals working in faecal sludge management (FSM). Our goal is to create a collaborative, responsive, and collective platform to advocate for the adoption and implementation of FSM as a utility service. We also aim to support our members in their work in helping to achieve SDG 6.2 and improve access to safely managed sanitation.

The African Water Association (AfWA)

The African Water Association (AfWA), initially the Union of African Water Suppliers (UAWS) was established in February 1980 out of the desire of some African water utility managers to pool their human, technical, and financial resources and optimize the training of men and women in the sector to create synergy around the search for solutions to improve access to drinking water for the African people.
